PANS/PANDAS

What is PANS/PANDAS/BGE?

PANS stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (a subset of PANS), and BGE stands for Basal Ganglia Encephalitis.

“An affected child generally has a sudden, dramatic change in personality, displayed as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, tics or other abnormal movements, personality changes, decline in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, restrictive eating and more.”

PANS/PANDAS can sometimes appear very similarly to FND in terms of physical symptoms so many individuals decide to get tested for PANS/PANDAS for a second opinion.
